Place a few lights low on tables or bookshelves so the shadows fall differently than they normally would. Suddenly, the same room your family sits in every day feels like the setting of a mystery.

A glowing lantern also makes the perfect centerpiece.

Put a battery candle inside a glass jar or lantern, then surround it with autumn leaves, old books, keys, or small pumpkins.

And here’s the fun part: if you’re playing a mystery game, turn the lantern off at just the right moment.

It is such a simple detail, but people love it.

Must-Have #2: One Big Activity Everyone Can Play Together

This is the part that can take your party from “cute Halloween gathering” to “we are definitely doing this again next year.”

Choose one main activity that brings everyone together.

A family mystery game works beautifully because nobody has to sit on the sidelines. Everyone can question suspects, share clues, solve puzzles, compare stories, and make dramatic accusations.

And yes, the dramatic accusations are usually the best part.

The adults get pulled into the story. The kids get to play detective. Quieter guests have clues to contribute, and the natural performers finally have a reason to use the suspicious accent they’ve been practicing all night.
